The celebrated restaurateur and author, Mark Hix, has announced the main sponsor for this year’s HIX ART award, the pioneering international gallery, Hauser & Wirth.
The £10,000 first prize, which is open to students and recent UK art college graduates, goes towards the artist’s studio costs. The award was first created in 2013 by Hix and gives young emerging artists a platform to showcase their work and launch their professional careers. The winner will also receive a solo exhibition at the HIX ART gallery in Shoreditch.
With locations in 9 cities across the globe: London, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, New York, St. Moritz, Gstaad, Zurich and Somerset, Hauser & Wirth aim to promote art through its extensive education programmes and print, Hauser & Wirth Publishers.
‘Our role as a gallery is to be an incubator for art, talent and ideas. Artists are at the core of all our activities so we are particularly proud to support the HIX award, an initiative which helps artists at a crucial moment when they are starting out on their journey,’ explains Iwan Wirth.
This year’s open call attracted a record number of entries when the deadline closed at the end of July. The judging panel included the co-founder and President of Hauser & Wirth, Iwan Wirth, the Head of Art at the Royal Academy of Arts, Eliza Bonham-Carter, GQ editor, Dylan Jones and Unit Gallery Founder Director, Joe Kennedy. The selected shortlisted artists are currently being shown in a group exhibition at the HIX ART gallery in Shoreditch.
Mark Hix explains, ‘We are thrilled that Hauser & Wirth have come on board as our principal sponsor. While the gallery represents some of the most influential artists in the world, it is also aware that many artists struggle to find their first toehold. It was to help them that I set up the awards and in lending their support they are doing the same.’
The winner will be announced in an awards ceremony at the gallery on the 24th October where they will be presented with the prize money and a trophy designed by Damien Hirst. Second place will receive a £1,000 voucher to CASS art and the people’s choice winner will receive a weekend trip for two to HIX Townhouse in Lyme Regis along with a dinner at HIX Oyster & Fish House.
Last years winner, Elizabeth Eade says, ‘Winning the HIX Award has been amazing. The Prize money has allowed me to continue to take adventures with my work, which has been a joy. I have had a busy year exhibiting, preparing for my solo exhibition and finishing my MA at Brighton, this has really focused my practice. It has also given me a confidence in my artistic convictions and I hope that this has translated into my work. I guess I feel braver.’
